Elko County Assessor: Veterans' and Disabled Veterans' Exemptions

The Elko County Assessor administers the State's veteran, disabled veteran and surviving spouse exemptions from the courthouse at 571 Idaho Street, and its Exemption Programs page spells out the 90-day service test, the DD-214 and the VA percentage documentation, adding the Merchant Marine in time of war or national emergency. No amounts are printed, so the 2026-27 figures rest on the Nevada entries.

Also called: property tax, assessor, NRS 361.090, NRS 361.091, Elko, Janet Iribarne, Merchant Marine, surviving spouse, DD214.

For: Veteran or service member, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemptions are the State's, under NRS 361.090 for a veteran who served in a listed period or campaign and NRS 361.091 for a permanent service-connected disability of 60% or more; the Nevada entries explain them, including the rule that separate ratings are added together. The Elko County Assessor administers them; the staff directory lists Janet Iribarne as Assessor, and the courthouse is at 571 Idaho Street, Elko, (775) 738-5398 for the county's main line. The county's Exemption Programs page (read 2026-10-26) prints the eligibility in its own words, and two of its phrasings are worth a veteran's attention. First, it names the branches - "Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, The National Guard, or Reserves, while on active duty, and the Merchant Marine during time of war or national emergency" - which restates the statute's Merchant Marine route the county page keeps alive. Second, it carries the full list of qualifying periods (from April 6, 1917 through December 20, 1996), Public Law 102-1 service and campaign or expedition service with a medal. The documents: a valid Nevada driver licence or ID; the DD214, honorable discharge paper, certificate of satisfactory service or separation documents showing entry and honorable-discharge dates; a Leave and Earnings Statement showing Nevada as home of record for a still-serving member; and, for the disabled veteran exemption, documentation of the percentage of permanent service-connected disability from the VA or the Armed Forces, with the benefit succeeding to the surviving spouse of a disabled veteran eligible at death. The forms are on the county's forms page. The page prints no dollar amounts, so the 2026-27 figures ($3,640 of assessed value for a veteran; $18,200, $27,300 or $36,400 at 60%, 80% or 100%) rest on the Nevada entries.
