Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Discharge papers. The Clerk's Recording Division records DD-214s. Recording is free, and a discharge recorded since September 1, 2003 is confidential, under Local Government Code 192.002 and Government Code 552.140; see the Texas entry. Assumed name certificates. Business and Commerce Code 71.155(a-1) lets a county clerk waive the fee for an assumed name certificate for a registrant who is a veteran, and El Paso does: "Veteran's filling fees may be waived with proper ID." The fee otherwise is $28, plus 50 cents for each additional owner. Walk in with the veteran ID, or by mail tick the veteran box on the form and send a copy of the ID or other proof of veteran status. The Clerk's page puts the waiver under registering a name; it does not say whether the $22 withdrawal fee is waived too, so ask. Who files with the Clerk. Since House Bill 3609 took effect on September 1, 2019, a corporation, limited liability company, limited partnership or other filing entity files its assumed name only with the Secretary of State (section 71.103), so the county waiver helps a sole proprietor or a general partnership. The Clerk's page still offers an "Incorporated Business or Profession" form at the same fee; a veteran's company should file with the Secretary of State instead. The State's fee waiver for a new veteran-owned business covers its certificate of formation; see the Texas entry. Recording Division, 500 E. San Antonio, Suite 105, El Paso 79901, 915-273-3532, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Every filer needs government-issued photo ID.
