Also called: property tax, 12-81g, veterans exemption, assessor, East Lyme.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

East Lyme’s Veteran’s Exemptions page gives the basic veteran’s exemption to a person honorably discharged after at least 90 days in a period of war, on a DD-214 filed with the Town Clerk by September 30, and prints no amount for it. The Additional Veteran Exemption follows the income guidelines approved annually by OPM: for 2025 calendar-year income, not more than $46,300 single or $56,500 married, with Social Security included, and $18,000 single or $21,000 married of income for a 100 percent disabled veteran. A veteran claiming a disability exemption files VA proof of the percentage with the assessor, once unless the rating changes. The Veterans Town Local Option Additional $5,000 Exemption was approved by the Board of Selectmen on February 1, 2006 as a local option ordinance. Its income requirement is the OPM limits plus $2,000, printed as $48,300 single and $58,500 married for 2025. The town’s American Legal Publishing code carries no taxation chapter, so the option rests on the page. OLR’s 2023 survey recorded the same $5,000 with limits $2,000 above the 2023 state amounts, and also reported East Lyme offering the 12-81kk primary-residence exemption and the 12-81h vehicle option, neither of which the page mentions. Ask the assessor. From October 1, 2025 a veteran claiming the 100 percent service-connected permanent and total disability exemption under C.G.S. 12-81(83) files form D-2 annually with proof, identification and residency, by January 1. The page also gives the active-duty serviceman’s total exemption of one passenger motor vehicle, applied for annually within fifteen months of the assessment date, and the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act affidavit for non-residents.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
