Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The town’s Veterans Exemption page gives the basic veterans’ exemption under C.G.S. 12-81(19) as $1,500 off the assessed value of real estate or motor vehicles, leased vehicles included, for a Connecticut resident who served at least 90 days of active duty in wartime, on a DD-214 filed with the town clerk by September 30. Disabled veterans receive benefits above the basic $1,500 determined by the percentage of disability, on a VA rating slip filed annually before November 1; at 65 the exemption rises to the next assessment date. The page’s Surviving Spouse Rights section entitles the surviving spouse of a person who, at the time of death, was entitled to and had the exemption, to the same exemption. The State Additional Veterans’ Exemption under C.G.S. 12-81g doubles the basic exemption from $1,500 to $3,000 for income within the state limits, printed as $46,300 single and $56,500 married for 2025. The Town Additional Veterans’ Exemption under C.G.S. 12-81f is $20,000 off assessment for income up to $61,300 single or $71,500 married, which the page describes as the state limits plus $15,000; those qualifying for the state program are enrolled in the town’s without applying. Both refile every two years between February 1 and October 1. OLR’s 2023 survey recorded the town option at $20,000 with limits $15,000 above the state’s, and also reported East Hartford offering the 12-81kk primary-residence exemption, the 12-81(21)(C) specially adapted house option and the 12-81h vehicle option, none of which the page mentions. Ask the assessor. A veteran rated permanently and totally disabled at 100 percent has the full value of the dwelling, not land or outbuildings, or one motor vehicle exempt under 12-81(83), on form D-2 filed annually by January 1. Veterans and non-resident service members also have the motor vehicle exemptions: one passenger vehicle for a Connecticut resident on active duty, applied for annually with a commanding officer’s letter, and the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Act affidavit for those stationed here on other states’ domicile.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
