Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Chapter 22 of the Jacksonville Ordinance Code establishes the Military Affairs and Veterans Department, whose director is also the city's Military Affairs and Veterans Officer. Because Jacksonville and Duval County are one government, it is the county's veterans service office. What it does, at no cost. Veterans Service Officers help with claims for disability compensation, pension, medical care, education and burial benefits, VA home loan certificates and income verification, and copies and corrections of military records. Walk-ins are seen first come, first served, Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.; the department does not book appointments with a service officer. It holds an Ask a Lawyer clinic twice a month (904-255-5550 to book), supplies the DD-149 and DD-293 discharge upgrade forms with a guide, and, with money from the Jacksonville Jaguars Foundation and others, gives emergency help to qualifying veterans with past-due rent or utility bills. Its social services programme, running since 1998, offers outreach, emergency and transitional housing, and job training for homeless and at-risk veterans (904-630-3680). Discharge papers. The department keeps a DD-214 only if one was left on an earlier visit, and releases it only with photo ID, a death certificate if the veteran has died, and proof of relationship for a relative. Otherwise it is an SF-180 to the National Archives. Office: City Hall, 117 W. Duval Street, Suite 175, Jacksonville 32202. Email [email protected].
