Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Durham County Veteran Services "actively provides effective counsel to veterans and their family members on veterans' benefits offered by the federal, state, and local government" and helps prepare the forms and supporting documents to file claims: disability compensation and pension, survivors' benefits, VA health care, burial (headstones, markers, flags, burial allowance claims and Presidential Memorial Certificates), education, vocational rehabilitation and home loans. It links the State's forms for veteran licence plates (MVR-33A), the disabled veteran property tax exclusion (NCDVA-9) and the disabled veteran lifetime hunting and fishing licence, and has a page of further federal benefits for veterans rated permanent and total or paid at the total rate for individual unemployability. Where. 201 N. Roxboro Street, Durham 27701. Phone 919-560-8387 (VETS), email [email protected]. The department has a director, a supervisor and three service officers. It closes to appointments for a few days twice a year while staff attend accreditation training (April 22 to 24 and September 21 to 25 in 2026); the Board announces those dates at its meetings. Events. A Memorial Day Remembrance Event each May 25, honouring the more than 350 Durham County service members who died in service, and a Women Veterans Recognition Day each June (June 12, 2026), with resources and vendors for women veterans. One page to read with care. The benefits page says Dependency and Indemnity Compensation "is awarded if the service member died on active duty or because of service-related disabilities (rated at 100% service connected for 10 years)". Those are two separate VA rules. DIC is paid where the death was in service or service-connected, with no rating needed; it is also paid, whatever the cause of death, where the veteran had been rated totally disabled for 10 years before death (or 5 years from discharge, or 1 year for a former prisoner of war). A survivor should not read the 10-year rule into a service-connected death.
