DuPage County Supervisor of Assessments: Veteran Exemptions

The DuPage County Supervisor of Assessments' page on the standard exemption for veterans with disabilities is current, but it mails every recipient a renewal without saying that 100% permanent and total and World War II veterans need not reapply. Its returning veterans page gives the $5,000 for the year of return only, when the statute also gives the year after.

The exemptions are the State's; the Illinois entries explain them. In DuPage County the Supervisor of Assessments administers them (421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton). The standard exemption (35 ILCS 200/15-169). The page is up to date on what the exemption is: a VA-certified service-connected disability of 30% or more with compensation, or service in World War II from taxable year 2024; $2,500 off at 30% to 49%, $5,000 at 50% to 69%, and the first $250,000 of equalized assessed value exempt at 70% or more; and the surviving spouse rules, including a spouse receiving Dependency and Indemnity Compensation. File PTAX-342 with the DD-214 and a current VA letter. Renewal. The page says the office mails a PTAX-342-R renewal form each year to the prior year's recipients, to be returned by October 1. Section 15-169(e) says a World War II veteran need not reapply, and since Public Act 102-895 (May 23, 2022) neither does a veteran VA rates 100% and permanently and totally disabled. The page does not say so. A veteran in either group who gets the form can return it, but losing it should not cost the exemption. The returning veterans exemption (section 15-167). The page says it reduces assessed value by $5,000 "for the tax year the veteran returned" and that "there is no renewal". Since taxable year 2010 the statute also gives the reduction for the taxable year after the year of return, so file PTAX-341 again the next year. Specially adapted housing (section 15-165). Up to $100,000 off the assessed value for a veteran VA has authorized specially adapted housing for, processed automatically when the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs certifies eligibility.
