The county's veterans service committee determines the amount it considers necessary for aid, including food, shelter, fuel, wearing apparel, medical or surgical aid, and funeral expenses, and certifies it to the county board, which may levy up to one cent on each one hundred dollars of taxable value to fund it (section 80-102). A person in need who served in the armed forces, was discharged or separated with an honorable or general (under honorable conditions) characterization or died in service, and has lived in Nebraska for at least one year and in Douglas County for at least six months, can apply through the office; husbands, wives, surviving spouses and minor children under eighteen are covered, as are last-illness and burial expenses for a qualifying veteran or spouse who dies leaving no next of kin.
