Also called: property tax, homestead, 48-5-48, Tax Commissioner, April 1, douglastax, Douglasville, 100%.

For: Veteran or service member, spouse, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemption is the State's, under Code section 48-5-48; see the Georgia entry. In Douglas County the Tax Commissioner takes applications: "Homeowner must file an application with the Douglas County Tax Commissioner's office on or before April 1st (may apply online or in person)". The county's homestead page: "Disabled Veteran: Must provide statement from VA receiving service-connected disability benefits paid at 100% as of January 1st (see sample letter)". The commissioner's own page adds: "All applications must be received by the Tax Commissioner's Office on or before APRIL 1 of the qualifying year. Douglas County has additional exemptions for 62 years of age or older, disabled veterans or their surviving spouses, and totally disabled homeowners." And: "Failure to submit an application on or before April 1, forfeits your right to Homestead Exemption for the current Tax Year". Where the county is narrower than the law. - The rating. "Benefits paid at 100%" takes in individual unemployability paid at the 100% rate, and section 48-5-48(a)(1)'s statutory limb and sight awards qualify on their own; the page names neither. - The deadline. Senate Bill 566 (2026) lets an applicant file from January 1 until the end of the 45-day appeal period after assessment notices are mailed, displacing April 1. - The county names no dollar amount on its pages, so the current indexed figure comes from the State entry.
