Dixon County Veterans Aid Fund

Dixon County’s section 80-102 Veterans Aid Fund, with no levy, paid $3,000 in 2024-2025 and nothing in 2025-2026, then paid the county’s Veterans Service Office account $3,000 in August and $1,500 in September 2026 from a $5,271 balance; the State Auditor found the office’s $1,500 petty cash unreconciled.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

How to apply. Dixon County's own page lists no aid; Dixon County veterans apply through the shared Dakota-Dixon Veterans Service Office, in Ponca on the first and third Thursdays, (402) 755-5625, or in Dakota City, (402) 987-2120 (see the Dakota County office entry, which also serves Dixon County). What the fund holds. Fund 1900, Veterans Aid Fund, levies no tax and lives on its balance and interest. It held $8,038.31 on July 1, 2023, paid nothing in 2023-2024 and $3,000.00 of veterans aid in 2024-2025, and held $5,165.48 on July 1, 2025, all of it budgeted for 2025-2026. The State Auditor's audit of the year ended June 30, 2026 shows no disbursement that year, $105 of interest, and $5,271 at year end. The Board then paid the "Dixon County Veterans Service Office" $3,000.00 from the fund on August 11, 2026 and $1,500.00 on September 8, 2026, which leaves under $800 if nothing else came in. The petty cash finding. The same audit found that the Veterans Service Officer had not reconciled the office's petty cash fund to the $1,500 the Board authorizes (it held $404 on June 30, 2026), and had not filed claims within 90 days, as section 23-135 requires, to replenish two payments made from it: $911 on September 26, 2025 and $958 on April 22, 2026. The audit does not say what the two payments were for. Who qualifies. Section 80-102 lets the county veterans service committee aid a veteran, a spouse, a surviving spouse or a minor child in need. Since LB1300 (Laws 2024, section 45) the veteran need only have served, been discharged honorable or general (under honorable conditions) or died in service, and lived a year in Nebraska and six months in the county; there is no wartime test. See the Nebraska entry on the county fund for the committee's discretion and the State's own aid fund.
