Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Article II of chapter 14 of the county code imposes an annual license tax of $20.00 on each motor vehicle normally garaged, stored or parked in the county, $10.00 for a motorcycle (section 14-18, Ordinance of November 20, 2007). The license year runs January 1 to December 31 and the fee is payable by June 5, collected as taxes are collected (section 14-19). Members of the National Guard pay half the state fee on presentation of the registration card showing National Guard plates (section 14-20). Section 14-17(c)(3) exempts "any vehicle displaying special permanent plates as approved and issued by the department of motor vehicles pursuant to Section 46.2-739 of the Code of Virginia... to veterans with service-connected disabilities", alongside volunteer rescue squad and fire department vehicles and antiques. Subsection (b) also excepts every vehicle section 46.2-755 exempts, which is the statute that bars a locality from charging a license fee on a disabled veteran's plated vehicle. A veteran who qualifies for the plates at a lower rating, or who kept a standard plate, should expect the fee and ask the Treasurer's office; the county's tax-rate table lists no separate disabled-veteran line.
