What the page says. Deuel County's Veterans Services page calls the County Veterans Aid Fund "a temporary emergency fund to assist veterans, their spouses, and dependents when there is an unforeseen emergency, and there are no other resources available", and prints no eligibility test of its own; since LB1300 (Laws 2024, section 45) section 80-102 reaches a veteran discharged honorable or general (under honorable conditions), or who died in service, who has lived a year in Nebraska and six months in the county, and a spouse, surviving spouse or minor child in need. What the fund holds and pays. The 2026-2027 budget's Veterans' Aid fund (1900) held $10,261.58 on July 1, 2024 and paid $2,431.09 in 2024-2025 - a $2,000.00 funeral expense and $431.09 of emergency relief (the October 1, 2024 claims to CHS Inc.) - then held $8,363.02 on July 1, 2025, paid nothing in 2025-2026 and held $8,821.00 on July 1, 2026, its only receipts interest; it levies no tax. The August 4, 2026 claims paid $225.69 for grave markers from the fund. A funeral fund. On August 6, 2024 the then officer, Patricia Nelson, told the Board that sections 80-104, 80-106 and 80-107 make the county responsible for decently burying an honorably discharged veteran who dies without the means to pay, and that the Veterans Service Board would budget for it (see the Nebraska entry on the county's burial and grave-marker duty). The 2026-2027 budget puts the whole $8,825.00 it adopts for the fund on the funeral expense line. A family facing a veteran's funeral without the means to pay should call the office, (308) 874-2477. See the Nebraska entry on the county fund for the committee's discretion and the State's own aid fund.
