Denver Human Services' Veteran Services team files VA claims for Denver residents who served and for their survivors, free, and offers peer support and help finding housing, food and other services, at the Bill Daniels Veteran Services Center on Santa Fe Drive. Its FAQ says it files only for honorable or other than honorable discharges, which leaves out general discharges it can and should file.

Veteran Services is Denver's county veterans service office under C.R.S. 28-5-801; see the Colorado entry. It is part of Denver Human Services, is not part of VA and takes no VA money, and its services are always free. It works with veterans, military personnel and their families "regardless of service time or discharge status", for anyone who lives in Denver and served.
What it does. Service officers file VA claims for compensation, pension and education, and file survivor benefits for eligible family members: survivors pension, Dependency and Indemnity Compensation, education and burial benefits. The team also gives in-person peer-to-peer support and an assessment with direct referrals for shelter and housing, food banks, education and training, legal services, public benefits, and rental or deposit help.
How. Call 720-944-3500 for an appointment, or send the online intake form for a reply within five business days. The team sits at the Volunteers of America Bill Daniels Veteran Services Center, 1247 Santa Fe Drive, Denver. Bring the DD-214, a government photo ID, and bank details for direct deposit of VA payments.
The discharge answer is too narrow. The FAQ says service officers "can only file claims for Veterans with an Honorable or Other Than Honorable discharge" and not with a dishonorable one. A general discharge is under honorable conditions and VA treats it as qualifying, so it is plainly within reach. An other than honorable or a bad conduct discharge from a special court-martial goes to VA for a character of discharge decision, and even a dishonorable discharge is not a bar where VA finds the veteran was insane at the time of the offence. Ask the team to file, or to explain the decision in writing.
