Denton Central Appraisal District: Disabled Veteran Exemptions

The Denton Central Appraisal District states the 100% homestead exemption as Tax Code 11.131 does, but asks a surviving spouse for a VA letter saying the veteran was rated 100% at death, leaving out the spouse of a veteran paid at 100% for unemployability, and describes the line-of-duty spouse exemption as one for a member "killed in action".

Also called: property tax, appraisal district, DCAD, 11.131, 11.22, 11.133, form 50-114, form 50-135, homestead, surviving spouse, unemployability.

For: Veteran or service member, child, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemptions are the State's; the Texas entries explain them. The Denton Central Appraisal District grants them for property in Denton County. 100% homestead. The district states it as section 11.131 does: 100% disability compensation with a rating of 100% or of individual unemployability, and, as section 11.42 allows, a veteran who qualifies part way through a year gets the exemption for the rest of that year. Where it is narrower than the statute. Surviving spouse of a 100% veteran. The district asks for "current VA letter identifying him/her as surviving spouse and stating that the deceased veteran had a service-connected disability of 100% at the time of his/her death". Section 11.131(c) covers the spouse of any veteran who qualified under subsection (b), including one rated below 100% but paid at 100% for unemployability. Such a spouse should send the VA letter showing the unemployability award and cite section 11.131(c). The page also leaves out section 11.131(d), which lets the spouse move the dollar amount of the exemption to a new home. Line of duty. The district describes the section 11.133 exemption as for the spouse of a member "who was killed in action". The statute covers a member "killed or fatally injured in the line of duty", in training or an accident as well as in combat. The partial exemption. The district's site has no description of the section 11.22 exemption, only the form, which its forms library labels "(10-90% Service Connected Disabilities)". Section 11.22 gives $12,000 at a rating of 70% or more, 100% included, on any one property the veteran owns, so a 100% veteran whose home is already exempt can still claim it on another property. The 2025 exemption for the surviving spouse of a veteran who died of a presumptive condition is not on the site either; see the Texas entries. The district is at 3911 Morse Street, Denton 76208, 940-349-3800.
