Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Town of Dennis grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a town can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. The Assessing Department’s Property Tax Exemptions page prints “Clause 22 ($800), 22A ($750) 22B ($1,250) 22E ($2,000) 22D&F (Full)” and describes the veterans’ exemptions as “$800 exemption or higher” for a veteran with a Purple Heart or a minimum 10 percent service-related disability. $800 and $2,000 are the statutes doubled, where $750 and $1,250 are the statutes unchanged, and no one option named in the section produces that mix - clause 22J at 100 per cent would double 22A and 22B too - so ask the assessors what the page rests on. No town meeting vote was found in the town’s online records. The town’s veterans’ agent is the Cape Cod District of the Department of Veterans’ Services in Hyannis, which the Executive Office of Veterans’ Services’ directory lists for the Cape towns; the directory names Gregory Quilty at 66 Falmouth Road (508-778-8740). The town’s own site has no veterans’ services page, so this entry points at the directory. Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through Dennis Veterans’ Agent: Cape Cod District (Gregory Quilty). Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

A VA rating, a decoration, or a surviving relativeClause 22 reaches a veteran rated 10 percent or more, a Purple Heart recipient, a Gold Star parent and the spouse or unmarried surviving spouse; 22A to 22E turn on named losses, decorations, a 100 percent rating or specially adapted housing. The rating filter does not hide this entry, because several routes need no rating.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
