Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs is the office every Pennsylvania county must have: a director of veterans affairs appointed by the county (16 Pa.C.S. 15524) and holding VA accreditation (51 Pa.C.S. 1731). See the Pennsylvania entry on county directors. COL Arthur L. Jenkins Jr. has been director since September 2023. How to reach it. 4990 State Road, Drexel Hill PA 19026; [email protected]. The county's pages give both 610-891-4645 and 610-891-4646, and the State's list of county directors gives 4646. What it does. It acts as a clearinghouse for every benefit application, county, State or VA: compensation, death pension, education and health care for families, and the State programmes a county director takes, including the real estate tax exemption and Veterans' Temporary Assistance (see the Pennsylvania entries). It keeps grave markers and flag holders for every conflict back to the Civil War, gives job-search counselling, especially to veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan and those about to separate, and refers homeless veterans to the Veterans Multi-Service Center (call 2-1-1, or 610-384-8387). It also runs the county veteran ID card with the Recorder of Deeds (see that entry). Jobs. Separately from the office, the county's Workforce Development holds State Veterans Employment Program grants: in September 2026 County Council extended Partners for Justice's veterans case management and supportive services contract to June 30, 2027 ($164,516.79) and engaged EDSI for veterans career services ($70,000). What to ask about burial. The office's Services page lists only VA's burial benefits. Title 16 also makes the county pay at least $75 toward the funeral of a veteran who lived in the county and of a surviving spouse who had not remarried, within one year of the death, and provide a base or lettering for a federal headstone at actual cost (16 Pa.C.S. 15509, 15510 and 15513). The county publishes no figure; ask the office. See the Pennsylvania entry on county burial and grave benefits.
