DeKalb County Supervisor of Assessments: Veterans' Homestead Exemptions

DeKalb County's Supervisor of Assessments, 110 East Sycamore Street, Sycamore (815-895-7120), takes the State's veteran exemptions on PTAX-342 and PTAX-341; its page still describes the 70% band as a total exemption where the statute exempts the first $250,000 of value, and says every veteran must renew yearly where a 100% permanent and total veteran need not.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemptions are the State's: 35 ILCS 200/15-169 (the standard homestead exemption for veterans with disabilities) and 15-167 (the returning veterans' exemption); see the Illinois entries. What the county's page says. "If you have a service-related disability of 30%-49%, you will receive a $2,500 exemption; 50%-69%, you will receive a $5,000 exemption; and if you are 70% or over, you are totally exempt of assessed value ... This exemption must be renewed annually." The returning veterans' exemption is "$5,000 off the assessed value" for the year a veteran returns from active duty and the next. Its forms page links PTAX-342, PTAX-342-R and PTAX-341. Against the law now. Since tax year 2023 the 70% band exempts the first $250,000 of equalized assessed value, with no cap on the home's value, so a more valuable home pays on the rest; and since May 23, 2022 a veteran rated 100% and permanently and totally disabled need not reapply once granted. The same page still says its exemptions "may be filed for the 2020 year through December 31, 2020"; file in the current year. Where.
