DeKalb County Tag Office: Disabled Veteran License Plates

The DeKalb County Tax Commissioner's tag office issues the State's free disabled veteran plates but says only the first is free and a second costs $45. The Department of Revenue and the Department of Veterans Service both say a qualifying veteran gets free plates for up to two cars or motorcycles. The office also names only the 100% and unemployability routes.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The plate is the State's, under Code section 40-2-69; see the Georgia entry. In DeKalb the Tax Commissioner's tag offices issue it on a VA entitlement letter stating the total percentage of disability, which the office asks for "each time a veteran plate is requested". The fee the office charges. Its Veterans page: "Veterans are only allowed a maximum of 2 Disabled Veterans plates. The first plate is free and the additional plate is $45.00." The Department of Revenue says a disabled veteran "shall be allowed to receive a free disabled motor vehicle license plates for up to two motorcycles or passenger cars for personal use", and the Department of Veterans Service says there is "no registration fee, manufacturing fee, or annual fee" for plates on up to two vehicles. A veteran asked to pay $45 for the second plate should point the tag office to the Department of Revenue page. Who qualifies. The office lists a 100% rating and unemployability paid at the 100% rate. Section 40-2-69 uses the definition in section 48-5-48(a)(1), which also includes a VA statutory award for loss or loss of use of a foot or hand, loss of sight, or the defined loss of vision in both eyes; the Department of Revenue also takes a physician's certificate through a Department of Veterans Service field office.
