For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority is an interstate compact agency of the District, Maryland and Virginia, and its fare programs are the most used transit benefit a District veteran has. Who qualifies. WMATA's riders with disabilities page lists, among the ways to prove a qualifying disability, a "Veteran Disability Certification letter with 60% or greater disability rating per the original letter issued by the Department of Veteran Affairs or a DD2765 Uniformed Services card". The card is for riders under 65; a rider 65 or older applies for the Senior SmarTrip card instead, which carries the same discount. A veteran rated below 60 percent may still qualify through a medical professional's certification on the reduced fare application, Medicare eligibility under 65, or the hearing test route. What it is worth. The card is a photo SmarTrip card that charges the reduced fare, about half, on Metrorail and Metrobus and on participating local bus systems. How to get it. In person, with a government photo ID and the VA letter, at the Transit Accessibility Center, 655 Virginia Avenue SW, or on certain Mondays at the TRIPS Commuter Store in Silver Spring. Cards are issued the same day with no appointment. The District's own transit. The Code authorizes discounts for veterans on the DC Circulator in D.C. Code 50-921.34(b)(1), but the District Department of Transportation ended Circulator service on December 31, 2024, so the provision has nothing to apply to.
