What the county posts. Dawson County's site has no veterans page and names no veterans service officer; its home page links the State's Texas Veterans Portal. The FY 2027 approved budget carries General Fund department 4420, "Veteran's Service", at $43,080, as for FY 2026: an officer's salary of $40,000, half social security of $3,060 and $5 placeholders for office, travel, conference and miscellaneous expense. The FY 2025 budget had carried $81,552.92, with a $60,000 salary, retirement and health insurance, but the FY 2025 actual column shows no salary paid, only a $1,555.96 social security credit. Whether the post is now filled is not said. A county of under 200,000 people is not required to keep an officer (Government Code 434.032; see the Texas entry). The county budget also pays the water and electricity of a "Veteran's Building" ($3,300 and $2,540 for FY 2027). Where to file a claim. TexVet's county list gives, for Dawson, the "Texas Veterans Commission Lubbock Office" at (806) 472-3490, whose claims counselors help any veteran free (see the Texas entry). For county matters the general contact is the County Judge's office, Judge Foy O'Brien, Room 202 of the courthouse, 400 South 1st Street, Lamesa, 806-200-2012, [email protected]. The County Clerk records discharges (see dawson-tx-county-clerk-discharges).
