Davidson County Register of Deeds: Free DD-214 Recording and Thank a Veteran ID Card

The Davidson County Register of Deeds records a veteran's DD-214 free and, at the same visit, makes a free Thank a Veteran photo ID card that serves as proof of service for the Nashville businesses on its discount list. A veteran whose DD-214 is already recorded there needs only a photo ID.

Also called: Thank a Veteran, veteran ID card, Register of Deeds, DD-214, discharge recording, veteran discount, Karen Johnson, Deaderick Street, Nashville, Metro Nashville, Metropolitan Government, Nashville-Davidson.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Every Tennessee register records a discharge free and keeps it confidential for seventy-five years under 10-7-513; see the Tennessee entry on military discharge recording. The Davidson County Register of Deeds adds a card. The Thank a Veteran card. Launched on November 10, 2019 by Register of Deeds Karen Johnson, who began a third term in September 2026, the programme gives a veteran a free photo ID card when the veteran records a DD-214 with the office. The card is proof of service to show at Tennessee businesses that give military discounts, so the veteran no longer carries a copy of the DD-214. The Register keeps a list of participating local businesses, given out with the card and shown in its free mobile app, "Nashville - Davidson Co. ROD", which businesses can also use to join. How to get it. Bring the DD-214 and a valid photo ID to the Register of Deeds, 300 Deaderick Street (the Public Square Garage), Nashville, TN 37201, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; staff record the DD-214 and make the card on the spot. If the DD-214 is already recorded with the office, bring only a photo ID. Both are free. Phone (615) 862-6790. The card is a courtesy, not a legal credential: a business decides its own discount and whether it accepts the card. It is not the veteran designation on a Tennessee driver licence, which the Department of Safety issues on a DD-214, or VA's Veteran Health Identification Card.
