Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The assessor’s guide to assessment exemption and benefits requires the DD-214 with the town clerk by September 30 and 90 days of wartime service for the regular exemption, takes the VA disability rating slip by October 1 for the disabled exemption, and, for veterans rated 100 percent permanently and totally disabled, applies the dwelling exemption of 12-81(83) - or one motor vehicle if the veteran owns no dwelling - with the annual OPM application due January 1, as the guide quotes the 12-93 claim requirements added by Public Act 24-46. The state additional veterans’ exemption doubles the basic assessment exemption at the state’s 2025 income limits of $46,300 single and $56,500 married, the limits for the 2026 grand list, filed February 1 to October 1. The local additional veterans’ exemption, adopted by the RTM on October 23, 2017, is a 10 percent reduction on the net assessment for income of $71,300 single and $81,500 married, filed in the same window. The guide also carries a motor vehicle exemption for those currently serving in the armed forces: one passenger motor vehicle exempt for a member on active duty, on the annual form with the commanding officer’s signature confirming “on active duty.” The guide’s “Specially Adapted Motor Vehicle Exemption” section grants a total exemption to any motor vehicle specially equipped or modified in a significant way for the purpose of transporting medically incapacitated individuals, on the Specially Equipped Vehicles Exemption Application completed annually by October 3rd. The guide also names a local veteran’s exemption “by Town ordinance” with no income requirement and prints no amount for it, and carries the surviving spouse of an entitled veteran the same exemption. Darien’s code of ordinances on Municode carries no veterans’ article, so the ordinance is not codified there.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
