Article IV of Chapter 37 of the Danville City Code relieves real estate and mobile home tax for an owner who is 65 or older or permanently and totally disabled on June 30 of the year before. Income of the owners and relatives living in the home cannot exceed $45,000, with the first $4,000 of each relative other than a spouse left out; a permanently and totally disabled owner deducts another $7,500, for an effective limit of $52,500. Net worth cannot exceed $50,000, excluding the home, up to one acre, and furnishings. Ordinance 2026-06.13, adopted July 7, 2026, set these figures. The relief is 100% with income up to $22,500 and 50% above that up to the limit, never more than $700 a year on one property; section 37-66 prints the second band as "45,501-45,000", a misprint for $22,501 to $45,000. An owner can choose a deferral instead; deferred tax carries 5% a year and is paid when the home is sold or within a year after the last qualifying owner dies. Apply each year between July 1 and October 1, a later window than most localities use, with the city's tax relief official; applications and help are at the Senior Citizen Center in Ballou Park (434-799-5216) during those months, and the Real Estate Division the rest of the year. A household that qualifies, and a renting household of no more than three people within the same limits, pays half the residential solid waste fee under section 17-26. It is not a VA rating of 100% service-connected, and a disabled veteran who does not meet that test can use it; section 58.1-3213(D) of the Code of Virginia lets a VA certification prove the disability.
