Danbury Veterans’ Property Tax Exemptions

Danbury gives a $1,500 basic veterans’ exemption, disability exemptions of up to $10,500, and a local exemption of up to 10 percent of assessed value with a $10,000 maximum. Its code also adopts the 12-81g(b) option for a veteran rated 100 percent, which OLR’s 2023 survey did not record.

Also called: property tax, 12-81g, veterans exemption, assessor, Danbury.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Danbury’s assessor pages give the basic veterans’ exemption as $1,500 off assessment, with discharge papers filed with the Town Clerk by September 30. The disability exemption under C.G.S. 12-81(20) runs by rating: up to $3,000 at 10 to 25 percent, $7,500 at 26 to 50, $9,000 at 51 to 75, and $10,500 at 76 to 100 percent or for a veteran over 65 with any rating of 10 percent or more. A veteran rated permanently and totally disabled at 100 percent has the primary dwelling exempt under 12-81(83), applying by December 31 each year with a current VA letter. The City Local Veterans Exemption under 12-81f is up to 10 percent of assessed value, real estate or motor vehicle, with a maximum of $10,000. Its page prints income limits for the 2022 grand list of $63,100 single and $71,400 married, and the state additional page the 2022 limits of $38,100 and $46,400; neither has been updated since. Code § 44-57 sets the local limit at $25,000 above the 12-81l amount, so it moves each year, and caps the city’s total for the exemption at $400,000 a year, the assessor setting each year’s level within it. Code § 44-58, adopted as Ord. No. 16 on December 2, 2014, adopts the 12-81g(b) option from the October 1, 2014 grand list: three times the 12-81(20) exemption for a veteran rated 100 percent, in place of twice under subsection (a). It prints income limits of $18,000 single and $21,000 married “or such amounts as may be set forth” in 12-81g, whose subsection (b) limits are now $21,000 and $24,000. The assessor’s pages do not mention it, and Danbury told OLR’s 2023 survey it did not offer it. Ask the assessor. Code § 44-60 exempts in full one specially equipped vehicle.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
