The service. The Dale County Solid Waste Management Office, 202 South Highway 123, Suite A, Ozark (334-774-6212, [email protected]; Monday to Thursday 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.), bills the county's residential collection: $18 a month or $216 a year for one can, $14 a month for each added can, a $50 refundable deposit, and a $5 monthly late fee. The enrollment form warns that "Failure to participate or pay for service is violation of Code of Alabama (1975), Section 22-27-2." The State exemption. Section 22-27-3(a)(3) of the Code of Alabama exempts from county solid waste collection fees a household whose sole income is Social Security, and Act 2026-506 adds, from October 1, 2026, a household whose sole income is veterans' benefits, in each case at or below the federal poverty level unless the county adopts a resolution reaching higher incomes; see the Alabama entry. The household shows its source of income to the county health officer, who forwards it to the solid waste officer, and asks again each year. What Dale County does. The Commission's Solid Waste Clerk II job description, approved for posting on March 24, 2026, lists among the clerk's duties "Processes and verifies Social Security exemptions annually," so the office already runs the exemption the act widens. No Commission resolution extending the veteran exemption above the poverty level appears in the minutes of October 2025 to September 2026, and neither the Solid Waste page nor its fee schedule mentions any exemption. How to ask. A household living only on VA compensation, pension, DIC or other veterans' benefits should ask the Solid Waste office (or the Dale County Health Department) for the section 22-27-3 exemption, with VA's benefit letters as proof of the source of income, and renew it each year.
