Dakota County (Nebraska) County Veterans’ Aid Fund

Dakota County’s Veterans Service Office runs a county veterans aid fund under section 80-102 for unforeseen emergencies, which the Board replenishes $4,500 at a time - $9,000 in each of 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 - though the county’s page still prints the wartime-era and honorable-only test that LB1300 removed in 2024.

Also called: county veterans aid, CVA, Veteran's Aid, 80-102, emergency aid, LB1300, DCVSO, South Sioux City, Dakota City, Hubbard, Homer, Jackson, Emerson.

For: Veteran or service member, spouse, child, survivor.

Where it applies

What the page says. The County Benefits page calls the CVA fund "a temporary emergency fund to assist veterans, their spouses, and dependents when there is an unforeseen emergency and there are no other resources available", for food, shelter, clothing, funeral, medical, dental and surgical items, applied for through the county service office; it is an aid program, so the veteran "must demonstrate an 'inability'" to pay, via an application. The test it prints is out of date. The page limits the fund to veterans who received an honorable discharge "and served during one of the defined 'wartime eras'". LB1300 (Laws 2024, section 45) struck the wartime-service test from section 80-102, which now reaches a veteran discharged honorable or general (under honorable conditions), or who died in service, who has lived a year in Nebraska and six months in the county, and a spouse, surviving spouse or minor child in need. A veteran who served only in peacetime, or holds a general discharge, should apply anyway. What the county spends. Aid is paid from a "Veteran's Aid" line in the general fund's miscellaneous budget rather than a levied fund: $13,500 in 2022-2023, nothing in 2023-2024, $9,000 in 2024-2025 and $9,000 in 2025-2026, against $18,000 budgeted each year, and $13,500 adopted for 2026-2027. The claims show the money going to the office in $4,500 replenishments - "DCVSO, veterans aid fund" on February 18, 2025, "DCVSO, replenish Veteran's aid fund" on January 20, 2026 and "Dakota County Veterans, replenish veterans aid fund" on June 22, 2026. How the office pays it out is not recorded. Apply through the Veterans Service Office, (402) 987-2120. See the Nebraska entry on the county fund for the committee's discretion and the State's own aid fund.
