Curry County (New Mexico) Assessor: Veteran and Disabled Veteran Exemptions
The Curry County Assessor, 417 Gidding Street, Clovis (575-763-5731), applies the State's $10,000 veteran exemption and the disabled veteran exemption on the Department of Veterans' Services' certificate, which the Department's Clovis office (904 W. 6th Street) issues on walk-in Wednesdays; claim within 30 days of the notice of value. Its instructions still say only a 100% veteran stops paying, though since 2026 the exemption follows the rating.
Also called: property tax, assessor, veteran exemption, disabled veteran exemption, $10,000, 7-37-5, 7-37-5.1, certificate of eligibility, DVS Form 1, Bruce King Building, 904 W 6th Street, 575-763-5731, Clovis, Texico, Melrose, Grady, Cannon Air Force Base, Cannon AFB, St. Vrain, Field.
The exemptions are the State's: the veteran exemption of 7-37-5 ($10,000 of taxable value, adjusted for inflation) and the disabled veteran exemption of 7-37-5.1, which from the 2026 tax year exempts the share of taxable value equal to the veteran's rating; see the New Mexico entries. The Department of Veterans' Services decides eligibility and issues the certificate; the Assessor applies it.
How Curry County's instructions say to apply. "Your local Veteran's Services Office at 904 W 6th St. (Bruce King Building) takes walk-ins on WEDNESDAYS from 10:00AM - 3:00PM", or email documents to [email protected] or call 505-827-6300 or 1-866-433-8387. Bring an honorable DD-214, proof of New Mexico residence (licence, voter registration or last year's State tax return) and DVS Form 1 (or Active Duty Form 1). "Bring the certificate to the Curry County Assessor's Office to claim this exemption on your property." A widow or widower keeps the exemption in the spouse's name for a year, then applies for a certificate in their own name.
The deadline. The Notice of Value page: the exemption "must be applied for no later than thirty (30) days after the mailing of the County Assessor's notice of valuation". Once allowed it carries forward while eligibility and ownership are unchanged; a veteran who used the exemption at the Motor Vehicle Division must report it, since only the remainder applies to property. The disabled veteran also files the State's 2026 certification of ownership and residence (revised February 20, 2026), with the certificate, when first claiming and on any change of ownership.
What is out of date. The instructions say the certificate comes "from the VA" (it comes from the State Department of Veterans' Services) and that "This exemption does not prevent you from paying property taxes unless the VA has issued you a 100% permanent and total disabled rating", which was the rule before 2026: a veteran rated below 100 percent now gets the proportional exemption on the certificate. The Notice of Value page still names the "New Mexico Veterans' Service Commission" and points to the 2004 constitutional amendment. The Assessor's 2026 estimate counts $8,163,754 of taxable value under the new proportional exemption in its first year.

Gate
Rule
Disabled veteran exemption, in proportion to the rating
From the 2026 tax year, a service-connected rating exempts the same share of the home's taxable value, after the $10,000 exemption; 100 percent exempts it all. The Department of Veterans' Services certifies it.
Or the $10,000 veteran exemption
The 7-37-5 exemption needs qualifying service and an honourable discharge, not a rating; an unmarried surviving spouse may claim it.
