The office. The Cuming County Veterans Service Office is in the courthouse, 200 S. Lincoln Street, Room 54, West Point, NE 68788, office (402) 372-6012, open Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The State's directory (updated October 26, 2026) and the county page name Steve Schwer ([email protected], cell (402) 380-4174) as Veterans Service Officer and Kim Kaup as assistant; parts of the county page still send veterans to a former officer, Jason Gatzemeyer, and place the office in Room 34. What it lists. Military personnel are asked to file discharges with the office for safekeeping, and copies go only to the veteran (or the family when the veteran is deceased or unable). On a veteran's death the office forwards the notice to the VA, orders a Presidential Memorial Certificate on request, provides the bronze grave marker the State requires, and helps with headstones and survivors' benefits; it helps with VA cemetery pre-need forms, and its page carries the handouts of a February 2, 2022 Veterans Roundtable and the steps to start a VA claim. The page's homestead tab says the office gives the Assessor a VA eligibility letter in the year a veteran's exemption is due (see the Nebraska entries for the filing rules). The board. The Cuming County Veterans Board meets on the last Monday of each month at 7:30 a.m. in the office; the page lists Jack Kindschuh, Steve Schwer, Rich Brahmer, Dalbert Storm and Les Feyerherm. The County Board accepted Mr. Feyerherm's reappointment on June 10, 2025 and Mr. Storm's (Bancroft representative) to June 30, 2030 on June 9, 2026. The Board's year. The Board accepted a revised VSO job description on February 11, 2025, after tabling it twice. On December 29, 2025 it signed the Nebraska Department of Veterans Affairs' memorandum of understanding for VetraSpec, in effect to December 31, 2028. At the office's semiannual update on January 28, 2026 it authorized the chairman to sign the Veterans Board's letter opposing LB1072; the office reported again on July 27, 2026. On June 24, 2026 the office asked a $5.00 an hour raise for its assistant, who is also the county's General Assistance Coordinator; the Board followed its Personnel Committee and gave a one-time $1.00 an hour increase for the General Assistance work. The money. The office (0100-803) spent $109,186.73 in 2023-2024, $73,731.31 in 2024-2025 and $79,764.14 in 2025-2026, against $108,500.00 budgeted each year and again for 2026-2027, including $3,500.00 for grave markers ($3,062.47 spent in 2025-2026) and a $2,000 aid line (see the aid entry).
