Cumberland County's veterans service office files VA claims and appeals and signs the State's forms for veteran licence plates, the disabled veteran hunting and fishing licence and the property tax exclusion, by appointment only. Its burial page still prints the old $300 non-service-connected allowances.
Also called: VSO, veterans service officer, VA claim, appeal, MVR-33a, NCDVA-50, NCDVA-9, Russell Street, Fayetteville.
For: Veteran or service member, spouse, child, survivor.
The Cumberland County Veterans Services Office helps veterans and dependants claim VA benefits, reviews VA decisions for fairness and accuracy, and writes appeals to the Board of Veterans' Appeals. It is at 301 E. Russell Street, Fayetteville 28301, open Monday to Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday 8:30 to 11 a.m. It sees clients by appointment only: call the front desk at 910-677-2970.
State forms it signs. The office signs the State Department of Military and Veterans Affairs forms that need a service officer, if you bring:
- MVR-33a, disabled veteran or specialty military plate: the vehicle registration card, a printed VA award or summary letter, and the DD-214.
- NCDVA-50, hunting and fishing licence: a printed VA award or summary letter showing at least a 50% rating.
- NCDVA-9, property tax exclusion: for a veteran, a printed VA award or summary letter showing 100% permanent and total with the effective date; for a widow or widower, a printed VA award letter showing Dependency and Indemnity Compensation and the veteran's death certificate.
Burial. The office's burial page describes the VA burial benefits. Its service-connected figure, up to $2,000, matches VA for deaths since September 11, 2001, but its non-service-connected figures, $300 for burial and $300 for a plot, are long out of date: VA pays $1,002 and $1,002 for a death on or after October 1, 2025, and $1,032 and $1,032 for a death on or after October 1, 2026. Check VA's own table before relying on the county page.
