Culpeper County Disabled Veteran Vehicle Tax Rate of $0.0001

Culpeper County’s rate schedule taxes a “Disabled Veteran” vehicle at $0.0001 per $100 against $3.00, which in practice is no tax. The schedule does not say who is in the class, and the Commissioner’s page describes only the 100% exemption.

Also called: car tax, reduced rate, personal property, amputee, blind, Culpeper car tax.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The tax rates the Culpeper County Board of Supervisors approved on May 6, 2025 set a rate of $0.0001 per $100 for "Fire & Rescue, Disabled Veteran, Aircraft", against $3.00 for ordinary vehicles. On a $30,000 car that is three cents. The schedule does not define the disabled veteran class, and the county code read through the Municode library does not create one. The class the Code of Virginia lets a locality tax at its own rate is section 58.1-3506(A)(19): one vehicle owned and regularly used by a veteran who "has either lost, or lost the use of, one or both legs, or an arm or a hand, or who is blind or who is permanently and totally disabled as certified by the Department of Veterans Services", with a DVS statement that the disability is service-connected. The routes are alternatives, so limb loss or blindness qualifies at any rating. The Commissioner of the Revenue's disabled veteran page describes only the statewide exemption in section 58.1-3668 for a veteran rated 100% service-connected, permanent, and total. A veteran with an amputation or blindness rated below 100% should ask the Commissioner for the disabled veteran rate with a DVS certification.
