Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Connecticut Military Department pays a Wartime Service Bonus of fifty dollars for each month of qualifying active duty service, up to five hundred dollars for non-combat service and up to twelve hundred dollars for service in a combat zone. The gate is the part that summaries get wrong, and it is worth being blunt about. This is a Connecticut National Guard program. The applicant has to be a current or former member of the Connecticut National Guard who was mobilized in support of a military operation, with at least ninety consecutive days of qualifying service. A Connecticut resident who served ninety days on active duty in a regular component and was never in the Connecticut National Guard is not eligible, even though several published summaries describe the eligibility as ninety days of active duty after September 11, 2001 with an honorable discharge and stop there. There is a deadline, and it is a real one. The application has to be made within three years of the end of the military operation in which the member participated. A veteran who deployed years ago and is only now hearing about the bonus should check the operation's end date before assuming the claim is live. Applications go to the Connecticut Military Department at 360 Broad Street in Hartford rather than to the Department of Veterans Affairs. Connecticut's older bonuses are gone and should not be confused with this one. Sections 27-140a to 27-140m, the Vietnam era bonus, section 27-140n, the World War II and Korean bonus, and sections 27-140o to 27-140y, the World War I bonus, were all repealed effective October 1, 2002. A surviving spouse or child researching an unclaimed bonus from those eras will find the statutes repealed with nothing substituted. No disability rating is part of the calculation, so a rating filter never hides this entry.
