Cowlitz County Assessor: Senior, Disabled and Disabled Veteran Exemption
The Cowlitz County Assessor's exemption page still gives the veteran route as an "80% or more service-related disability" and a $54,000 income figure for 2023 income. For 2027 the floor is 40%, and Cowlitz's income thresholds rise to $49,000, $57,000 and $65,000.
The exemption is the State's; the Washington entry explains it. The Cowlitz County Assessor administers it and publishes its own page under Property Tax Relief, alongside deferral pages for homeowners of limited income and for seniors and disabled citizens.
What the page says. The applicant must be at least 61, unable to work because of a disability, or "a veteran with an 80% or more service-related disability"; own the home outright, as a contract purchaser or as a life estate; occupy it as a principal residence at least six months a year; and have total household income of "$54,000 or less" for 2023 income, with the 2022-and-prior tiers ($30,000, $35,000 and $40,000) printed beside it. Once approved the exemption renews every four years unless circumstances change.
What applies from 2027. Chapter 200, Laws of 2025 cut the evaluation needed to 40% for taxes collected in 2027 and after, which turn on the veteran's rating and income in 2026; the total-disability route, which reaches a veteran paid at the 100% rate for individual unemployability, stays. For 2027 to 2029 the Department of Revenue sets Cowlitz's thresholds at $49,000, $57,000 and $65,000, with $72,890 for the deferral programme, and chapter 163, Laws of 2026 takes Combat-Related Special Compensation out of the income counted. A veteran rated 40% to 70% should apply for 2027 and ask the Assessor for a form that reflects the 40% floor.
