Coventry Veterans’ Property Tax Exemptions

Coventry’s Code § 94-37 exempts the specially adapted house and lot of a veteran assisted under Title 38 in full, adopts the 12-81g(b) triple exemption for a veteran rated 100 percent, and the assessor’s veterans document gives $4,000 to $7,000 by disability rating with the doubled additional exemption.

Also called: property tax, 12-81g, veterans exemption, assessor, Coventry.

For: Veteran or service member, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The assessor’s veterans’ exemptions document requires residency in Coventry by the October 1 assessment date and an honorable discharge filed with the town clerk by September 30. A veteran with a VA rating receives $4,000 for a 10 to 25 percent rating, $5,000 for 26 to 50 percent, $6,000 for 51 to 75 percent and $7,000 for 76 to 100 percent, not permanently and totally disabled, or age 65 and over. Those are the statutory amounts of 12-81(20) raised by the revaluation increases of 12-62g. Code § 94-37, Ord. No. 220 of March 15, 2004 as amended by Ord. No. 246 on December 1, 2014, enacts two options. Subsection (a), under C.G.S. 12-81(21)(C), exempts the dwelling house and its lot in full for a veteran who received financial assistance for specially adapted housing under section 801 of Title 38 and applied it to the dwelling, and allows the same for the surviving spouse. Subsection (b), effective October 1, 2014, entitles a veteran with a 100 percent VA rating who meets the 12-81g(b)(1) eligibility requirements to the additional exemption the statute establishes: three times the 12-81(20) amount, for income of $21,000 single or $24,000 married. A veteran VA rates permanently and totally disabled at 100 percent has the dwelling exemption of 12-81(83) on an annual application on the OPM form with an updated VA rating letter; the document notes the dwelling is the structure of the home only, not the land. The additional veterans’ exemption doubles the exemption for a veteran who meets the state income qualifications, biennial application, and a veteran VA rates 100 percent disabled qualifies at $18,000 single or $21,000 married. Coventry did not answer OLR’s 2023 survey, and no Coventry ordinance adopting a 12-81f local option was found; Chapter 94 carries none.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
