The Contra Costa County Veterans Service Office, established in 1946, is the county veterans service office California counties run under Military and Veterans Code section 970; see the California entry. It helps veterans, dependents and survivors with VA compensation, pension and aid and attendance, education, burial, Dependency and Indemnity Compensation and death pension claims, the CalVet College Fee Waiver (form DVS-40), benefit verification letters for social services, and replacement discharge papers through form SF-180.
DMV paperwork. The office issues form VSD-001, which the DMV needs both for the VETERAN designation on a driver licence and for Disabled Veteran plates and the registration fee exemption; bring an original or certified DD-214 (member 4 or service 2) and California ID. For the plates, a doctor also completes DMV form REG 256A; the office notes that a 100% rating neither is required for nor guarantees the plates, which turn on mobility, limb loss or blindness.
