"The primary responsibility of the Colleton County Veterans Affairs Office is to execute the appropriate actions to determine a veteran's and their dependents' entitlement to federal and state benefits administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs. You may apply through this office for compensation, pension, survivor's benefits, burial and memorial benefits, home loans and educational assistance, as well as VA Government Life Insurance. If you wish to obtain copies of your military service records or replace your medals, we will be glad to assist you. Applications for enrollment for VA Health Care and for the Veterans Victory House State Nursing Home in Walterboro are also available."
The DD-214 rule. "Contact us with questions regarding eligibility requirements. Please provide a copy of your DD Form 214 (discharge). If you do not have your DD Form 214, our office can assist you with obtaining a copy through the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis."
Where and who. Veterans Affairs Office, 219 S. Lemacks Street, Suite 124, Bernard Warshaw Complex (Health Department), P.O. Box 637, Walterboro, SC 29488; 843-549-1412 - Director Kenneth V. DeLee at extension 6897 ([email protected]), Senior Clerk Nikki Smith at extension 6898 ([email protected]); fax 843-549-0132; "Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Drop Box available during business hours." The page was last updated September 12, 2025.
The state's own listing disagrees on the name. The South Carolina Department of Veterans' Affairs' county-resources page still prints "Service Officer: Janet D. Smith" with the same 843-549-1412 and [email protected] - the county's own page (and its staff table) name Kenneth V. DeLee as Director/Veterans Affairs Officer; the state's row predates the change and a veteran should ask for the director's office, not for a name on the state's list.
The referral address the page gives for the VA Regional Office: Department of Veterans Affairs Regional Office, 6437 Garners Ferry Road, Columbia, SC 29209, telephone (800) 827-1000.
