Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemptions are the State's; see the Alabama entries on sections 40-9-19 and 40-9-21. The county's part is the Revenue Commissioner's, who is in Colbert County both the assessor and the collector. What the Revenue Commissioner's FAQ says. "If you are 65 years of age or a permanently disabled homeowner you may be eligible for a complete exemption of property taxes on the property where you reside. Your net taxable income must be less than $7,500.00 ... for a complete exemption up to $12,000.00 ... for a partial exemption. It is the owners responsibility to let us know if you qualify. Proof of age, when required, may be established by a driver's license, birth certificate, insurance forms, or other legal documents. To prove disability, you must furnish a statement from two different sources as to your disability. Physician's letters, Veterans Administration and retirement letters are all acceptable. Only one proof is required if you have a letter from Social Security. Exemptions should be applied for before December 31st of each year based on status to qualify for the next taxing or billing period. Renewals may be done by mail." The property-tax page carries the exemption table (H/1 through H/4, the State's $4,000 maximum and the county's $2,000, the homestead not exempt on the county school millage) and the district millage rates - Tuscumbia .048 total, Muscle Shoals .0405, Sheffield .0515, and the rural districts at .030 - which is what a veteran's exemption is worth against. The FAQ publishes no veteran-specific exemption text of its own, so the State entries on the totally disabled veteran's full exemption (40-9-21) carry that route; a veteran with a VA total rating brings the VA letter the FAQ already names.
