Coffee County Revenue Commissioner: Disability Exemption and Homestead
Coffee County's Revenue Commissioner, Ronald L. Burns, takes the State's homestead and disability exemption claims at the Enterprise and Elba courthouses; the county's Homestead Summary Chart lists the permanent-and-total-disability rows - no maximum on the state exemption, $5,000 on the county's, and no income limit under section 40-9-21.
Also called: property tax, homestead, revenue, ad valorem, disability exemption, 40-9-21, H-3, Ronald L. Burns, Enterprise, Elba.
The State exemptions are the substance here: Code section 40-9-21's complete exemption for a person permanently and totally disabled on the principal residence and up to 160 acres, and section 40-9-19's routes, as the State's principal-residence entries explain - including Act 2026-598's release from annual verification for a VA-determined veteran and Act 2026-268's tentative certificates. In Coffee County the claims are taken by the Revenue Commissioner's office at the Enterprise courthouse (101 S. Edwards Street, Enterprise) or the Elba courthouse.
What the county publishes. The Revenue Commissioner's Estimating Your Taxes page walks through classification, millage and exemptions, and links the county's own "Homestead Summary Chart" (PDF, dated February 7, 2006) - "ALABAMA HOMESTEAD EXEMPTIONS. As defined in Code of Alabama, 1975; 40-9-19 through 40-9-21.1". Its Permanent & Total Disability rows: the state exemption "No Maximum Amount", the county exemption "Not more than $5,000", and the state-county-city principal residence exemption under Title 40-9-21 for "Permanent & Total Disability, Regardless of Age - None, Not more than 160 acres, No [school tax collected], None [income limitation]". The chart is nineteen years old and prints no veteran-specific row beyond disability; the State entries carry the current rules.
