Clinton County (Michigan) Clerk: Military Discharge Filing

The Clinton County Clerk, Stephanie L. Dush (County Clerk/Register of Deeds, [email protected], 100 E. State Street Suite 2600, St. Johns, 989-224-5140), files copies of DD-214 discharges and produces certified copies under MCL 35.32, which keeps the record confidential - viewable or copied only by the veteran, a person with the veteran's written permission, or the surviving heirs; the office issues no veteran ID card, pointing to the driver's-license veteran designation instead.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The county's Military Discharge page (County Clerk's Office): "Following discharge from the service, veterans should place a copy of their discharge (Form DD-214) on file with the County Clerk. By doing so, the County Clerk can produce certified copies." Under MCL 35.32 "a military service discharge record is confidential and may be viewed or copied only by the veteran, a person with the veteran's written permission, or the surviving heirs of a veteran"; see the Michigan entry on discharge recording, which also lets a service officer, the Michigan Veterans Trust Fund or a county veterans counsellor working a claim see and copy it free. The office is "currently not issuing Veteran ID Cards"; the page points to the veteran designation on the Michigan driver's licence.
