Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

What it is. An Arkansas county veterans service officer is employed by the county judge and paid from the Quorum Court's budget, trained and accredited through the Department of Veterans Affairs, and partly reimbursed by the State under section 20-81-106: one dollar for every two the county spends, up to $3,600 a year, or $4,800 in a county with more than 2,500 veterans, plus $500 a quarter each for VA accreditation and for access to VA's benefits system; see the Arkansas entry on the Department and county service officers. Help with a claim is free. Who and when. The Department of Veterans Affairs' county finder (last updated August 19, 2026) lists Greg Herron at P.O. Box 115 (Courthouse), Rison, AR 71665, (870) 325-7205, [email protected], Monday to Wednesday 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Thursday 8:00 a.m. to noon. The county has no website to compare. Cleveland is in the Department's District 5, whose District Veterans Service Officer is Sue Harper in Monticello, (870) 623-6900. The change of officer. Deltaplex News and the Cleveland County Herald reported that Herron told the Quorum Court in August 2026 that he would retire at the end of the year; he called the post "a political appointment" first given him by the late County Judge Gary Spears, and recommended Jeff Howard of Rison, an Air Force retiree, as his successor. With the support of County Judge Don Triplett and incoming County Judge Jim Houston, the Court approved hiring Howard as a part-time assistant through the end of 2026 at $264 a month, plus a hotel for the state service officers' meeting; the County Clerk said the veterans services budget had the money. Ask for either of them at the number above. The Veterans Building. The county's Hall-Morgan Veterans Building, across from the courthouse at 404 Sycamore St., is where the veterans office held meetings in April 2026 to restart an American Legion post. In December 2025 the Court voted to stop renting it for private events; public events by agencies and civic groups can still use it (the community site's older listing sends bookings to the County Judge's office, (870) 325-6214). The veterans court. None: the Thirteenth Circuit's plan for 2026 and 2027 lists no drug court or veterans court for Cleveland County, and the Judiciary's veterans treatment court map does not shade it.
