Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The office. The Clay County Veterans Service Office is at 202 W. Fairfield, Clay Center, NE 68933 (the State's directory, updated October 26, 2026, places it at the southeast corner of the elementary school), phone 402-762-3508, [email protected], open Wednesday and Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Veterans Service Officer is Kady Schnitker, who keeps Nuckolls County's office in Nelson on Mondays and Tuesdays (402-225-3971 extension 9). The county's page says the office helps veterans and dependents learn about VA benefits, work up applications and gather supporting documents, and apply for VA medical centre eligibility, and lists county veterans aid (see that entry), Nebraska Veterans Aid, Veterans' Home admission, the tuition waiver, homestead exemptions, plates, grave markers and free help with every VA form and claim. How Clay County came to have its own officer. From a September 1, 2014 agreement until 2026 Hamilton County's officer served Clay County, and Clay paid the Hamilton County Treasurer a $2,291.67 "VSO Contract" every month, $27,500.04 a year as the budget's "Interlocal Vet Services" line; that officer, Mike Irons, reported to the Board on January 27, 2026 and asked how to reach younger veterans. On March 31, 2026 the Board received Hamilton County's notice terminating the agreement, the last monthly payment appears in the April 28, 2026 claims, and on April 14 the chairman reported talks with other counties. On May 19 he reported that Kady Schnitker, Nuckolls County's officer, had agreed to serve Clay County as well, with a formal offer to come through the county's personnel firm, and on May 26, 2026 the Board appointed her Clay County's Veterans Service Officer from June 1 to December 31, 2026. On August 25, 2026 the Board put her on the office's bank account at Cornerstone Bank in place of Mr. Irons. The Board's year. The Board adopted Resolution #25-18 for Operation Green Light for Veterans on October 28, 2025, lighting the courthouse green from November 4 to 11; approved the Nebraska Department of Veterans' Affairs' memorandum of understanding for January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2028 on November 12, 2025; paid CenTec Cast Metal Products $1,637.80 for veteran grave markers on December 23, 2025; and named Chairman L. Wayne Johnson its member of the Veterans Service Committee on January 20, 2026. Homestead certification. The Assessor's homestead FAQ, under "How do I qualify as a Disabled Veteran or their Widow?", lists the exemptions for a veteran totally disabled by a non-service-connected illness or accident, each "(annual certification required)", and sends the veteran to the Veterans Service Office first for a physician's form and the office's certification. The application under section 77-3508 is annual, but 77-3508(1)(c) says the medical certification need not be repeated when the condition has not changed, though the assessor may ask for it again (see the Nebraska entries). The money. Until 2026 the office budget (0100-803) was the Hamilton contract alone: $27,500.04 spent in 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 and adopted for 2025-2026. The 2026-2027 budget, the first with an officer of the county's own, is not yet posted or filed.
