The county's Senior Deferral and Veterans Exemption page sets out three routes a veteran or a veteran's family can take, each with its form posted on the page. Disabled veteran or surviving spouse. "Military war veterans with a disability of 40% or more or the surviving spouse or registered domestic partner of a war veteran may be entitled to exempt a portion of his or her property's assessed value from property taxation. Apply between January 1 and April 1." The page's "Veteran Exemption Claim Form" (DocumentCenter 275) is the Department of Revenue's "Disabled Veteran or Surviving Spouse Exemption Claim" under ORS 307.250-307.283: file with the county assessor on or before April 1 to claim the exemption for the tax year beginning July 1 (property acquired after March 1 but before July 1 gives 30 days to file); a disabled veteran attaches discharge papers (DD-214 or equivalent) showing the period of active service and conditions of release, plus the disability certificate - Part 1 asks for certification "as having disabilities of 40 percent or more" by VA or the U.S. Armed Forces, and a veteran who has filed before need not file again unless qualifying conditions change, and may claim up to three prior tax years; a surviving spouse or registered domestic partner attaches proof of the marriage or partnership, the veteran's death certificate and the veteran's discharge papers, and must not have remarried or re-registered; property in a trust must be held in a revocable trust with the documentation. The "Veteran Spouse Exemption Instructions" (DocumentCenter 276) sit beside it. The amounts are the State's (see the Oregon entries). Active-duty service members. "The Oregon Active Military Service Member's Exemption, also known as Qualified Soldier's Exemption, per ORS 307.286 provides for a residential property tax exemption for qualified military service members. The exemption amount began at $60,000 of assessed value in 2005 and increases 3% each year." Claim on form 150-303-084 with the required documentation; contact the office to file. Surviving spouses of public safety officers. "Pursuant to Senate Bill 1513, the Board of Clatsop County Commissioners approved a resolution and order on June 9, 2016 which allows for the surviving spouse of a fire service professional, police officer, or reserve officer killed in the line of duty to receive a property tax exemption of up to $250,000 off their homestead's assessed value providing they have not remarried."
