Athens-Clarke County Tax Commissioner: the Disabled Veteran Homestead Exemption Table

The Athens-Clarke County Tax Commissioner's Exemptions table gives the S5 disabled-veteran homestead exemption its local figures - $109,986 on the State line and $117,014 in the county's columns - against the State's 2026 amount of $126,526, with in-person application and a 45-days-from-assessment-notice deadline (July 6, 2026); the SD and SS/SE rows extend it to a 100% disabled veteran 65 or older and to survivors.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Tax Commissioner's own table. The Property Tax Division's Exemptions page prints the "State and Local Homestead Exemptions Offered in Athens-Clarke County" with the veteran rows: - "S5 100% disabled veteran; surviving spouse of disabled veteran who has not remarried $109,986 $117,014" - the State figure and the county's own amount, repeated across the county and school columns. - "SD Age 65 - 100% disabled veteran; surviving spouse of disabled veteran who has not remarried - 100% on home and up to 10 contiguous acres of land and $90,364 on balance of value, $117,014." - "SS Surviving spouse of U.S. service member killed in action who has not remarried $109,986 $117,014 ..." and the SE age-65 survivor row at "100% on home and up to 10 contiguous acres of land and $90,364 on balance of value, $117,014." Where that is behind the law. Code section 48-5-48's exemption is the greater of $32,500 or the current specially adapted housing grant maximum; for 2026 the Department of Revenue's figure is $126,526 (see the Georgia entry and the Muscogee County note on the older figures). The table's $117,014 is the 2024 State amount Athens-Clarke's local exemption adopts, and $109,986 the State line's figure; a 2026 applicant qualifies for the State's $126,526 on the State portion. The SD and SE rows work section 48-5-48.1's age-65 full-value route, and SS/SE work section 48-5-52.1's killed-in-action survivor exemption, which the county's Homestead Exemptions page also records from its November 2000 referendum act. How to apply. "Applications for homestead exemption must be submitted in person at the Tax Commissioner's Office." "The deadline to apply for a homestead exemption is the same as the deadline to appeal your annual property assessment. This deadline changes slightly each year and is 45 days after the mailing date of the annual Notice of Assessment issued by the Athens-Clarke County Board of Assessors, typically mailed in mid-May. (For example, the 2026 application deadline was July 6, 2026.)" Questions to [email protected] or 706-613-3120 option 6. The Board of Assessors' pages publish no veteran guidance of their own; the exemption applications route through the same offices, and a VA letter is the proof of rating.
