Clark County Recorder: DD-214 Recording Is Free but Public

The Clark County Recorder records a DD-214 without charge, but a recorded DD-214 is a public record anyone can view and buy a copy of, with only the Social Security number redacted. Recording it is optional.

Also called: DD-214, DD214, county recorder, discharge papers, public record, NRS 419.020.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Clark County Recorder's page warns before you record a DD-214 that the Recorder is a public record office: anyone can view a recorded document and buy a copy, under NRS 247.090. The Recorder redacts the Social Security number before release but nothing else. Recording is not mandatory. The page says the Recorder does not charge for recording a DD-214 "as a courtesy". It is not a courtesy: NRS 419.020, which the same page quotes, requires every county recorder to record a certificate of honorable discharge "free of any charge therefor". Weigh the trade before recording. A DD-214 shows date of birth, service history, decorations and the reason for separation. A veteran who wants a safe replacement copy without publishing it can request copies from the National Archives instead. Arizona, California and Harris County, Texas, by contrast, keep recorded DD-214s out of public view.
