Clark County Veterans Service Commission: Van Rides to the Dayton VA
Twice-daily van service to the Dayton VA Medical Center and the Springfield outpatient clinic for veterans with verified appointments, plus First Transit bus passes, with cancellations due the day before and escalating sanctions for conduct on the van.
Also called: transportation, rides, van, VA appointments, Dayton VA, Springfield CBOC, First Transit, bus pass.
Every Ohio commission must arrange regular transport to the VA medical centres serving the county (Revised Code 5901.03(H); see the Ohio entry). Clark County's commission runs a van to the Dayton VA Medical Center twice a day and transports veterans to the Springfield community-based outpatient clinic. Only veterans with verified appointments are carried; a walk-in must have a VA staff member sign the appointment sheet, and a spouse or companion needs a physician's statement of medical need. Rides are booked and cancelled only through the office at 937-521-2030 - never by calling the driver - with cancellations due by 4 p.m. the day before (3 p.m. Friday for a Monday ride) or the veteran is counted a no-show. Riders to Dayton are expected back the same day, and the Van Transportation Agreement carries conduct rules with escalating penalties: a written warning, then 90-day, 180-day and permanent sanctions.
Bus passes. The commission's monthly Report to Posts says bus pass assistance is given in the form of First Transit bus passes - First Transit operates Springfield's fixed-route buses - and its report form counts rides to the Springfield VA outpatient clinic beside the van trips.
The scale, from the Report to Posts statistics (read 2026-10-13). The reports log 51 to 112 veterans transported a month - 2026's run from 51 (June) to 112 (April), with 5,769 van miles in July and a seventh driver added that month - beside 35 to 40 rides a month to the Springfield VA outpatient clinic.
The vans. The commissioners authorized a 2025 StarTrans Senator II at $117,900 and a 2025 Chrysler Voyager LX at $68,900 early in 2026, then rescinded both (resolutions 2026-0098 and 2026-0099) and bought a 2025 Ford Transit van for $74,839 instead (resolution 2026-0194, March 2026); in September 2026 the board moved $44,839 more to cover a further Ford Transit van, money that includes a donation from the DAV which the commission's director warned would revert to the county's general fund if unspent by year's end.
