Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Ohio requires each county veterans service commission to bury or cremate a veteran, or a veteran's parent, spouse or surviving spouse, who died without the means to pay, with the county paying up to $1,000 (Revised Code 5901.25 to 5901.27; see the Ohio entry). What Clark County pays. The board's minutes carry the authorizations: $1,000 to the Robert C. Henry Funeral Home for the burial of Kenneth Parker, $1,000 each to Jones-Kenney-Zechman for the cremations of Jerome Henderson, Penny Jo Richards and Carl Goldsberry, $1,000 to Adkins Funeral Home for Eugene Allison, $999.33 to Newcomer Funeral Home for Milton Conley, and $1,000 to Richards, Raff & Dunbar for Dallas Fairchild III, between October 2025 and September 2026. Call 937-521-2030 before signing a funeral contract; the page describes the benefit for the veteran, and a family burying a veteran's spouse or parent should ask, since the statute covers them too. Memorial Day. Under Revised Code 307.66 the county pays each chartered veterans post up to $500 a year toward Memorial Day expenses; the commission collects the posts' expense reports - the 2026 deadline was July 25, and a post that failed to file was to receive nothing the next year, while one that returned its unspent $500 by cheque stayed eligible - and the minutes show the payments: $500 each to the Marine Corps League Detachment 963, American Legion Post 6 and AMVETS Post 25, and to American Legion 286, VFW 9966 and American Legion 176, and to MOPH 620, AMLEG 362 and AMVETS 148. The commission also buys grave flags and flag holders from its Memorial Day line ($3,240.63 of flags and holders, and $1,144.11 and $347.43 of holders in other months). Surviving spouses. The commission mails sympathy letters to the surviving spouses of county veterans who die and issues each a $100 gift card, per its Report to Posts. VA allowances. The commission's burial benefits page reproduces the VA's burial allowance tables - up to $2,000 toward a funeral for a service-related death after September 11, 2001, and $300 plus a $300 plot allowance for a non-service death - with the eligibility rules and the documents to bring (discharge, death certificate and the itemized funeral statement) to an appointment at 937-521-2030.
