Churchill County Funding for VFW Post 8071 and Armed Forces Day

Churchill County gives $3,500 a year to the local organization for its Armed Forces Day event, and the Board considered a $750 community-support application from VFW Post 8071 for its March 29, 2026 Vietnam Veterans Benefit Event; a veterans-and-seniors housing fundraiser was turned away for lack of budget.

Also called: VFW, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 8071, Armed Forces Day, $3,500, $750, community support funding, Vietnam Veterans Benefit Event, Tricks and Tees, golf tournament, Fallon.

For: Veteran or service member.

Churchill County's veteran giving runs through the Board of County Commissioners' community-support applications, and the 2025-26 and 2026-27 records show three lines. The standing line is Armed Forces Day: the county "provides $3,500.00 annually to this organization for their Armed Forces Day event", as the Board's October 2, 2025 packet records while turning down a larger request. The application the Board considered on January 21, 2026 was from the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8071: "Application for Community Support funding from the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8071, in the amount of $750.00, to support the VFW for the Vietnam Veterans Benefit Event on March 29, 2026." Post 8071 is the Evans-Kendall post, which Storey County's own grant resolution of July 2026 names as serving that county's veterans too, so the post's events reach beyond Fallon. What was refused, and why. The second annual Tricks and Tees Golf Tournament asked the county for support; its "proceeds from the event will go to supporting a long-term goal of a small housing community for veterans and seniors". The packet records that "due to budget restraints, there is not enough available funds to fulfill the requested amount", noting "this year's budget was reduced by 56.4% in addition to the 31% from the prior" year. The December 4, 2025 packet restates the request - "a way to provide meaningful support to our Veterans and seniors, while maximizing the resources that the county already manages" - and the tournament's own paper argues its certificate course "will spotlight the county's golf course and will directly benefit Veterans and seniors". The tournament went ahead on sponsors rather than the county's general fund. For a veteran organization planning an event in Churchill County, the route is a community-support application to the Board through the Clerk-Treasurer's agenda process, (775) 423-6028; the Armed Forces Day line shows the Board funds this category when the budget allows.
