Churchill County Recorder: Recording Military Discharge Papers
The Churchill County Recorder (Tasha Hessey, 775-423-6001) records under NRS 247, and its 2020 fee schedule lists no military-discharge line, so an honorable discharge is recorded free under NRS 419.020 and the office charges its standard fees for nothing else on that document.
NRS 419.020 requires every county recorder to record a certificate of honorable discharge "free of any charge therefor"; see the Nevada entry. The Churchill County Recorder's Office, Tasha Hessey, at 155 N. Taylor Street, Suite 131, Fallon, (775) 423-6001, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., records under NRS 247 and offers a Recorder Document Index, copy requests, forms and genealogy help on its pages.
The fee schedule (effective October 1, 2017, revised January 1, 2020) prices standard documents at $43 - $25 of recording fee under AB 169, $5 technology fund, $1 foster care, $5 legal service for the indigent, $1 district court investigators and $6 abused and neglected children - and lists maps, marriage certificates and UCC filings. It lists no line for a military discharge, so the office neither charges one nor prints the statutory free rule; a veteran asked to pay for recording an honorable discharge should cite NRS 419.020. What the pages do not say is whether a recorded discharge appears in the public index; recorded documents in Nevada are generally open to public inspection, so a veteran weighing whether to record a DD-214 should ask the Recorder how it is handled first. Recording a discharge is always optional.
