The office. The county's page puts the Cheyenne County Veterans Service Office in the Annex Building, 920 Jackson Street, Sidney (PO Box 217, Sidney, NE 69162-0217), phone 308-254-3300, fax 308-254-7349, open Monday to Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (closed noon to 1) and Friday 8:00 a.m. to noon, with appointments recommended (308.254.3300 or [email protected]); the State's directory (updated October 26, 2026) gives the courthouse, 1000 10th Avenue, and older cheyennecounty.net addresses. The Service Officer is Fred Wiedeburg, MSG, US Army (Retired), and the office manager Whitney Whatley, a Marine Corps veteran. The office is "a county entity, employed by Cheyenne County and governed by a five-member Veterans Service Board", and helps with VA compensation and pension claims, appeals and higher-level reviews, survivors' benefits, education benefits, Nebraska Veterans Aid (applied for locally), grave registration, the county aid fund, the DAV van (see that entry), referrals and certified copies. In July 2025 Mr. Wiedeburg told the Board he serves about 1,200 veterans, about 900 of them in Cheyenne County. What the page explains. Its FAQ walks a veteran through getting a DD214, the State's reduced-fee hunting, fishing and park permits, a VA home loan certificate of eligibility and Nebraska Veterans Aid for a utility shutoff, and says the 100% service-connected homestead exemption now needs a VA eligibility letter only every five years (years ending in 0 or 5) unless the rating is new; the office requests the letter, which the veteran files with Form 458 between February 2 and June 30. The Board's year. The Veterans Service Office Board meets quarterly, on the second Tuesday of January, April, July and October; on January 20, 2026 the Commissioners reappointed Ken Childers and Stephanie Disney and appointed Gregg Wolff, an Army National Guard retiree, to replace James Haddix. On April 6, 2026 the public heard that Nancy Rexroth would present quilts to five veterans. On May 4, 2026 Mr. Wiedeburg explained the disabled veteran motor vehicle tax exemption that took effect January 1, 2026 (LB650; see the Nebraska entry) and its 30-day filing deadline, and the Commissioners approved an exemption application they had tabled on April 20. The money. The filed 2025-2026 budget gives the office (0100-803) $118,936.00, against $102,297.87 spent in 2024-2025.
