Where it applies
Written for the jurisdictions listed here.
- Chesterfield County, VACounty
Chesterfield charges an annual county vehicle registration fee of $20 on a passenger vehicle and $15 on a motorcycle under section 13-53 of the County Code. Section 13-51(c)(4) says the fee "will not be charged on" any vehicle displaying the special plates DMV issues under Code of Virginia section 46.2-739 to veterans with service-connected disabilities.
That goes further than state law requires. Section 46.2-755(B) bars the fee only on one vehicle of a veteran who has the DMV disabled veteran exemption. Chesterfield's ordinance covers every vehicle with Disabled Veteran plates, and Disabled Veteran plates are available to a veteran with any VA-certified service-connected rating. The ordinance does not extend the waiver to a surviving spouse's vehicle unless it displays the plates.
