Chesapeake Disabled Veteran Vehicle Tax Exemption

Chesapeake exempts one owned passenger car, pickup, or panel truck used mainly by or for a veteran rated 100% service-connected, permanent, and total, or paid at 100% for individual unemployability.

Also called: car tax, personal property, vehicle tax, Chesapeake car tax, TDIU.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Section 30-515(g) of the City Code applies the statewide one-vehicle exemption. The Commissioner's page accepts VA certification of a permanent and total service-connected disability with an overall rating of 100% or a compensation rating of 100% for individual unemployability. The vehicle has to be owned, not leased, and regularly used by or for the veteran. The exemption ends at the veteran's death and does not pass to a surviving spouse. Only one vehicle can be exempt; a second can take the city's lower rate if the veteran is in that class.
